  • 23 Oct. 2023

    The 13th CSJ Chemistry Festa 2023 (organized by The Chemical Society of Japan) was held from October 17th (Tue) to 19th (Thu), 2023 at Tower Hall Funabori (Tokyo). We presented a following public seminar of KAKENHI project on “Aquatic Functional Materials: Creation of New Materials Science for Environment-Friendly and Active Functions” supported by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, Japan (MEXT) Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas.

    The public seminar at the CSJ Chemistry Festa has been held since 2020. Based on the concept of our area, we presented and discussed aquatic functional materials exhibiting electronic/ionic-, bio/environmental-, and mechano-functionalities.

2022

  • 20 Jan. 2023

    The 3rd Industry-Academia collaboration forum was held at Osaka University Hall. This was the first on-site event, with a limited number of participants. Dr. Eri Ito (Menicon Co., Ltd.) gave a lecture on the research and development of contact lenses as an Aquatic Functional Material and explained the importance of scientific methods in manufacturing in an easy-to-understand manner. In oral and poster presentations session by the members, active discussions were held, which is an advantage of an on-site event.

    The 6th Research Area Meeting of Aquatic Functional Materials (not open to the public) was held on 19 January 2023 (Thursday) at the Osaka University Hall, Toyonaka Campus, Osaka University.
    Researchers of Planed and Publicly Offered Research have discussed about aquatic functional materials based on the common perspective of 'water as a molecule'. We have realized once again the importance of face-to-face discussions in poster session. The 6th Research Area Meeting confirmed the dramatic development and collaborative research activities in the area.

    The 12th CSJ Chemistry Festa2022 (organized by The Chemical Society of Japan) was held from October 18th (Tue) to 20th (Thurs), 2022 at Tower Hall Funabori at Tokyo. We held a following public seminars of KAKENHI project on “Aquatic Functional Materials : Creation of New Materials Science for Environment-Friendly and Active Functions” supported by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, Japan (MEXT) Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas.

    The public seminars at the CSJ Chemistry Festa has been held since 2020. In 2022, the Public Principal Investigators in our area reported water science in the research fields of polymers, coordination chemistry, organo-conjugated molecules, and biological polymers. We will hold the public seminars in next year on the CSJ Chemistry Festa.

  • 9 May 2022

    The 5th Research Area Meeting of Aquatic Functional Materials (not open to the public) was held online from May 9th (Mon) to 10th (Tus), 2022.
    From Apr. 2022, the second half of the 4th and 5th fiscal year has been started. Researchers of Publicly Offered Research have joined to the research area. The 5th Research Area Meeting confirmed collaborative activities within the area to further develop and deepen the research in the area.

2021

  • 4 Feb. 2022

    The 2nd Industry-Academia collaboration forum was held online. More than 400 participants, mainly industrial researchers, attended the forum, many of whom were repeat attendees. We had 18 reports from the Planned Researches A01-A03 and 12 reports from the Publicly Offered Researches, as well as lectures by three industrial researchers, Mr. Katsuyuki Morii (Nippon Shokubai Co., Ltd.), Dr. Yoshiko Koizumi (Daikin Industries, Ltd.), and Dr. Masaru Nakata (Toray Research Center, Inc.). The forum reaffirmed the need to focus on the relationship between the surface of materials and water in order to solve problems in product developments.

    The 4th Research Area Meeting of Aquatic Functional Materials (not open to the public) was held online.
    Researchers from Publicly Offered Research gave lectures about the results of researches obtained over the past two years, as well as their joint research and collaboration activities within the research area. Active discussions on the new science about water were held, and collaborative activities within the area were confirmed.

  • 12–14 Nov. 2021

    The 1st Industrial Internship of Aquatic Functional Materials was held online.
    An online tour of the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) was held, and the lectures on “Neutron Scattering”, “Neutron Quasi-Elastic Scattering”, and “Industrial Applications of Neutrons” were delivered. Participants also experienced “data analysis of Neutron Quasi-Elastic Scattering”.

    The 11th CSJ Chemistry Festa2021 (organized by The Chemical Society of Japan) was held online.
    Symposium of KAKENHI project on “Aquatic Functional Materials : Creation of New Materials Science for Environment-Friendly and Active Functions” supported by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, Japan (MEXT) Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas.   • 17-18 Sep. 2021

    Three forums of joint research meeting (non-public session) of "Aquatic Functional Materials" (Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas by JSPS) was held online.
    In order to promote the joint research and collaboration activities during movement restrictions, a close partnership between planned researchers and publicly offerred researchers was built aiming to integrate physics with chemistry and biology.

    The 3rd area meeting (non-public session) of "Aquatic Functional Materials" (Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas by JSPS) was held online.
    Publicly offerred researchers introduced the latest research outcputs, as well as joint research and collaboration activities in the fields. There was an active discussion among researchers in the field and new collaboration activities concerning water were developed.

2020

  • 5 Feb. 2021

    The 1st Industry-Academia collaboration forum was held online on February 5 (Fri), 2021.
    There were approximately 400 participants, mainly from the industries. They actively engaged in these exchange and sharing activities.
    There are high expectations from the industry on the researches and projects in this research area for establishing a society with low environmental impact and harmonized materials.

  • 23 Oct. 2020

    The 2nd area meeting (non-public session) of "Aquatic Functional Materials" (Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas by JSPS) was held online.
    With the aim of incorporating a variety of disciplines from planned researchers and publicly offerred researchers, the meeting agenda was set up in multiple online conference rooms and an exchange of ideas was conducted. In addition to the joint research and collaborative activities in the fields, there were active discussions intending to establish new materials science on “Aquatic Functional Materials”.

    The 1st area meeting (non-public session) of "Aquatic Functional Materials" (Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas by JSPS) was held online.
    Initially, the public meeting was planned as an onsite face-to-face meeting at Osaka University in April. However, from the perspectives of emerging infectious diseases prevention, it was held in June. The planned reserachers described research goals, technologies, and research contents to be carried out in this reseach area, as well as proposed joint researches and collaborations within the area. Publicly offerred researchers also introduced their research proposals. Lively discussions were held toward the development of innovative science concerning water.

2019

  • 4-5 Mar. 2020

    The 1st aquatic internation workshop of “Aquatic Functional Materials” (Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas by JSPS) was held.
    It was arranged as a joint symposium between German Excellence Cluster "3D Matter Made to Order" and MEXT Grant-in-Aid for Scienctific Research on Innovative Areas “Aquatic Functional Materials”
    The symposium was initially planned to be held at Heidelberg University in Germany. To prevent the spread of emerging infection diseases; however it was conducted based on a summary of publications.

  • 7 Jan. 2020

    A research meeting called "Tsuruta forum" was held by Masaru Tanaka (Principal Investigator of Research group A03) at Inamori Hall in Ito Campus, Kyushu University on January 7th (Tue), 2020. This forum was held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Professor Teiji Tsuruta. It was a study group discussing the role of water molecules at biointerface and a creation of guidelines for material design. This forum was sponsored with a suppport of industry-academia collaboration.

Event for young researchers

2022

  • 22 Feb. 2023

    The 2nd and 3rd Industry Internship of Aquatic Functional Materials was held in Material and Life science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) on 13th and 21th February, 2023. The participants toured the J-PARC and its history, as well as the neutron beamline and muon experimental equipment, following an explanation of the principles and applications of neutrons and actual examples of some industrial use. Many young researchers and students participated in the events, which also enhanced collaborative academic exchanges.

  • 9 Jan. 2023

    The 2nd Academia Internship of Aquatic Functional Materials was held in Kobe Campus of Information Science and in online from 20th December 2022 to 8th January 2023. A total of 18 students and young researcher who belong to the experimental labs in both planned and publicly offered research group. The aim of the internship was to examine molecular simulation technique to understand deeply about materials in their own research. The subject of the study was hydration of organic molecules in aqueous.

  • 3 Dec. 2022

    The 3rd Young Researchers School of Aquatic Functional Materials was held at SPring-8 onsite. A total of 17 people, including 5 undergraduate students, 11 graduate students, and 1 postdoc, attended from the laboratories of researchers participating the project.
    We observed the experiments of microbeam FT-IR measurement using an infrared microscope, the beamline for small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering, and for hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Students commented, "I was able to feel SPring-8, the world's most advanced instrument, and learn what kind of measurements are being performed inside." "I understood the standing position of research." Face-to-face discussions deepened exchanges between researchers and students in different fields.

2021

  • 15 Nov. 2021

    The 1st Industry Internship of Aquatic Functional Materials was held online from 12th-14th November, 2021. A total of 18 participants attended online lectures on "Neutrons and Neutron Scattering" and "Development of New Products using Synchrotron Radiation, Neutrons, and Supercomputers by Industrial Researchers". Next, an virtual tour of Material and Life science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) was done. All the participants joined on-line training of the QENS data analysis.

  • 2 Oct. 2021

    The 1st Academia Internship of Aquatic Functional Materials was held online from 20th September 2021 to 1st October 2021. A total of 13 students and young researcher who belong to the experimental labs in planned research group. The aim of the internship was to examine molecular simulation technique to understand deeply about materials in their own research. The subject of the study was hydration of organic molecules in aqueous solution, host-guest complexation of cyclodextrin in organic solutions, using molecular dynamics analysis.

  • 20 Sep. 2021

    The 1st Academia Internship on the topic of "Molecular Simulation", organized by the administrative group, was held for young researchers (PD/graduate students) who belong to the planned research groups with the kind support of Prof. Washizu (University of Hyogo).

2020

  • 2nd Young Researchers School of Aquatic Functional Materials was held on 28th November 2020, using the online conference room. There were over 70 participants from various research fields in this area. They learned about different fields and actively interacted with other students. (Scene)

    In collaboration with the advisory board member, Prof. Zhao (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore), the internationl workshop for young researchers of "Aquatic Functional Materials" was held on December 8, 2019 at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. The researches concerning water were actively discussed among young researchers from Japan and overseas.

  • 12-13 Nov. 2019

    1st Young Researchers School of Aquatic Functional Materials was held at Hyogo University, Kobe Campus for Information Science, and SPring-8. 45 attendants (30 students and 15 researchers) from various research fields in this project were actively interacted.(Scene)

2022

  • On February 1, 2023, European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) published the annual report entitled “ESRF Highlights 2022”. The research article regarding the synthesis and function of nanofilm interacting hydrogen-bonded water between two layers of fullerene molecules conducted by the research group including Motomu Tanaka (Principal Investigator of Research Group A03, Kyoto University), Koji Harano (Principal Investigator of A01/Publicly Offered Research, National Institute for Materials Science), and Akihisa Yamamoto (Research Collaborator of Research Group A03, Kyoto University) was selected as Scientific Highlights.
